A read through will be held on
Thursday 2nd July 2020
at 8pm at the Memorial Hall.

Auditions will be held on
Thursday 3rd September 2020
at 8pm at the Memorial Hall.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

Leading Characters - will all need to move well. Suggested ages are for guidance only.

Maria Rainer - singing (soprano), dancing, 20-40 years
A postulant at Nonnberg Abbey - young, free spirited, warm, gentle and kind with much determination.

Captain Georg von Trapp - singing, 30-50 years
A retired Austrian naval captain. Polished, yet very military in the way he runs his life to repress his sadness over the death of his wife; underneath, he is warm, understanding, and determined.

Max Detweiller - singing, 30-50 years
Charming and vital; a man of sophistication who enjoys the good life; loyal friend to the von Trapp family.

Elsa Schrader - singing, 30-50 years
A baroness of taste and elegance, sophisticated, dignified, witty.

Mother Abbess - singing (wide vocal range), 40+
Motherly, understanding, strong and authoritative, but kind.

Liesl von Trapp - singing, dancing, 15-20 years
The oldest child, becoming a young lady with an interest in boys. She has a maternal attitude to her siblings.

Friedrich von Trapp - singing, 12-16 years
Tough exterior, very much trying to be "the man" of the family.

Louisa von Trapp - singing, 12-16 years
Rebellious attitude, troublemaker.

Kurt von Trapp - singing, 10-14 years
Gentle and mischievous.

Brigitta von Trapp - singing, 10-12 years
Smart, reads a lot. Perceptive, speaks her mind.

Marta von Trapp - singing, 10-11 years
Very sweet and gentle.

Gretl von Trapp - singing, 10 years
Cute and a little bit shy.

Rolf Gruber - singing, dancing, 16-20 years
Suitor to Liesl, telegram delivery boy, later Nazi soldier. A very pleasant young man, later more aggressive.

Sister Berthe - singing, 30+
Mistress of Novices, prudish, straight laced with a quick tongue, she is less tolerant than other nuns.

Sister Margaretta - singing, 25+
Mistress of Postulants, very kind, understanding and concerned.

Sister Sophia - singing, 25+
Neither demanding nor critical, sticks with the rules.

Sister Agatha & Sister Catherine - singing, 30+
Listen well and sympathetic to both sides.

Franz - non-singing, slight German accent, 40+
The von Trapp Butler, rather formal but not without spirit. He is very German and loyal to the Fascist cause.

Frau Schmidt - non-singing, slight German accent, 35+
The housekeeper who does her job efficiently. Stern, but sympathetic to the motherless children.

Smaller supporting roles

Herr Zeller non-singing, German accent, 40+
Officious, unsmiling Nazi official whose primary concern is the power of the Third Reich.

Baron Elberfeld non-singing, German accent, 50+

Baroness Elberfeld non-singing, German accent, 45+

Admiral von Schreiber non-singing, German accent 40+

Special Postulants and Nuns to be cast from the chorus.

Male chorus members 16-60+ years
Nazi soldiers, neighbours, Salzburg citizens & contestants.

Female chorus members 16-60+ years
